The Color Purple, a 2023 movie musical adaptation based on the Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker, is now showing in Philippine cinemas.

Starring Fantasia Barrino, the film follows Celie, a black woman who grows up in intense poverty and abuse in the American South during the early 20th century. She is changed when she finds her self-worth through the help of two strong female companions.

Barrino is joined by Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. Barrino and Brooks, who respectively played Celie and Sofia in the Broadway revival, reprise their roles for the film. Brooks is also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Directed by Blitz Bazawule and written by Marcus Gardley, the 2023 version is the second film adaptation of the novel. The first was the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg, who also produced it with Quincy Jones. Spielberg and Jones return as producers, along with Broadway producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the latter of whom also portrayed the role of Sofia in the 1985 movie.
