‘Sunset Boulevard’ to Make Philippine Premiere in 2027
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard will make its Philippine premiere from August 18 to September 12, 2027 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati.
Produced by CueCraft Entertainment by arrangement with LW Entertainment Ltd., the production will feature a Filipino and international cast and creative team, with an original classic staging created especially for Philippine audiences. Casting and the full creative team have yet to be announced.
Based on Billy Wilder’s 1950 film of the same name, Sunset Boulevard follows Norma Desmond, a former silent film star who longs to return to the spotlight, and Joe Gillis, a struggling screenwriter who becomes drawn into her world. The original film, starring Gloria Swanson as Norma and William Holden as Joe, won three Academy Awards.
The stage musical features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, with orchestrations by David Cullen and Lloyd Webber. Its score includes “With One Look,” “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” “The Perfect Year,” and “Sunset Boulevard.”
The musical premiered in London’s West End in 1993 before opening on Broadway in 1994, with Glenn Close starring as Norma Desmond in the latter. Close won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance.
Most recently, Nicole Scherzinger starred as Norma in Jamie Lloyd’s 2023 West End revival, which subsequently transferred to Broadway. Scherzinger won both the Olivier and Tony Awards for her performance.
Performances are scheduled Wednesdays to Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 3 PM and 8 PM, and Sundays at 2 PM and 7 PM. Opening night on August 18 and gala night on August 26 will both begin at 7:30 PM.
