‘Shorts and Briefs’ Returns for its 12th Year This September

Shorts and Briefs (SNB) returns for its 12th edition this September at Halxyon Club in Poblacion, Makati.

Presented by Eksena PH, the annual theater festival features six new productions by emerging playwrights, directors, actors, and lighting designers, all exploring this year’s theme, “What Ifs.”

According to the company, this year’s festival brings together a mix of returning SNB directors and first-time play directors, alongside emerging and first-time stage actors, new playwrights, and young lighting designers. The company adds, “Through their diverse voices, fresh perspectives, and creative visions, the festival continues to provide a space for emerging artists to create, collaborate, and take meaningful steps in their artistic journeys.”

The six featured productions are:

1. PALAKAKAY

Written by CJ Rioboca | Directed by Katherine Nobleza-Estavillo

CJ Rioboca’s PALAKAKAY asks: Will you still love me if I turn into a frog? Kakay (Evie Clemente) contemplates finally having sex and poses the question to her boyfriend, Jio (Zen Lavapie). Yuri Naga also appears as the Healers.

2. KAPAG WALA NG DEADLINE

Written by Angel Karl Serrano | Directed by Miguel Moreno

Fresh graduate Galina (Monique Cordero), who is uncertain of what the future holds, strikes up a conversation with Winston (Matty Puno), the ghost of an undergraduate, in a toilet of all places.

3. ANG UNANG BADING SA LANGIT

Written by Ivan A. Matias | Directed by Rye Capulong

Red (Jaytea Cruz) confronts painful truths about his rainbow-colored life as the inquisitive Attendant Ramilo (Boom Gonzalee) takes him on a heavenly journey. Ricci Ferrera also appears as Amor, Trixie, and Mother.

4. BAGO KA NANGYARI

Written by Avy Cabzon | Directed by Isabelle Prado

Alex (Emilio Macabantad) and Louise (Virginia Reign Juego) revisit pivotal moments in their relationship as they travel back in time.

5. TAKOT AKO MAMATAY NUON, NGAYON, SLIGHT LANG

Written by Zara Mia Lagera | Directed by Johnny B. Maglinao

Mori, alternately played by Emi Frivaldo and Ryan Davin, confidently faces the inevitability of death.

6. KAPE AT BROWNOUT

Written by Reinhardt Patrick Orillos | Directed by Phi Palmos

College dormmates Edward (Jamir Zamora) and Shaun (Kurt Valero) find their relationship tested during a storm as graduation draws near.

The festival’s creative team is led by Festival Director Karl Alexis Jingco, with Rolando T. Inocencio serving as Artistic Consultant, Joseph Matheu of Hues and Cues as Lights Consultant, and DJ Gabby as Sound Designer.

Shorts and Briefs runs from September 18 to October 4, with performances on Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 3 PM, and Sundays at 3 PM and 7:30 PM at Halxyon Club in Poblacion, Makati.

Tickets are priced at ₱1,000 for all six plays. An early-bird rate of ₱850 is available until August 16. Tickets may be purchased through the Eksena PH Facebook page.
