PETA’s ‘Kislap at Fuego’ and ‘Children of the Algo’ Twin Bill Returns this January

After their debut at PETA Control + Shift: Changing Narratives in 2024 and 2025, Kislap at Fuego and Children of the Algo return to the PETA Theater Center from January 27 to February 7, 2026. Having evolved from experimental works into audience favorites, the two productions will now headline the Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA) Main Theater Season as a twin bill.

Both plays were originally developed in 2024 as raw pieces for the Control + Shift LIVE shows. Their strong reception led to a featured showcase at the Control + Shift: Changing Narratives Festival in 2025, paving the way for this expanded run.

Now in its third installment and opening its doors to a wider audience, from educational institutions to the general public, this double feature bridges historic mysticism with contemporary digital realities, offering two distinct yet resonant reflections on Filipino identity.

Dominique La Victoria’s Kislap at Fuego, directed by Maribel Legarda and J-mee Katanyag, with Filipino translation by Gentle Mapagu, centers on an unexpected fairytale romance between a kapre and a country girl set against the backdrop of the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The play interrogates how we speak of love, rebirth, and revolution.

Meanwhile, Mixkaela Villalon’s Children of the Algo, directed by Johnnie Moran, delves into the lives of Gen Z content creators, hiding their deeper realities while navigating the digital age with wit and vulnerability, challenging viewers to see beyond the algorithm.

Presented as a twin bill, these works aims to invite reflection on how Filipino values persist, adapt, or are contested across generations.

Kislap at Fuego features CJ Navato as Ezequiel, Felicity Kyle Napuli as Gabriela, and Ekis Gimenez and Carlon Matobato as members of the ensemble. The artistic team includes Maribel Legarda (also choreographer) and J-mee Katanyag (directors), Dominique La Victoria (playwright), Gentle Mapagu (Filipino adaptation and dramaturg), Kabaitan Bautista (musical director and sound designer), Boni Juan (production designer), Bene Manaois (projection designer), and Rafa Sumilong (lighting designer).

Children of the Algo stars Otep Madriaga as Mark, Nyla Festejo as Yani, James Pe Lim, and Frances Marie Akol as Jen. The artistic team includes Johnnie Moran (director and production designer), Mixkaela Villalon (playwright), Mikaundre Santos (dramaturg), JJ Valerio (sound designer), and Rafa Sumilong (lighting designer).
