‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ Opens at Ayala Malls Cinemas on October 15
Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh star in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, opening exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas on October 15, with sneak previews on October 11 in select locations. The movie is directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Beauty and the Beast), with Lopez and Luna also serving as executive producers.
Set in Argentina in 1983, the story takes place during the country’s military dictatorship. Political prisoner Valentín (Luna) shares a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh), a gay window dresser imprisoned under charges of “immorality,” whose love of old movies becomes his refuge from confinement. Despite their differences, the two men begin to connect as Molina recounts the story of his favorite film, also titled Kiss of the Spider Woman.
In Molina’s narration, audiences meet Ingrid Luna (Lopez), an actress caught in a story about a woman pursued by a mythical figure whose kiss is lethal. As the prisoners imagine the film-within-the-film—told through song and dance—they find a temporary escape from their confinement and reflect on ideas of freedom and human connection.
Condon, who won an Academy Award for Gods and Monsters and directed Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast, also wrote the screenplay for Chicago. His Kiss of the Spider Woman is based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig and the Tony Award–winning Broadway musical by Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago).
The stage musical premiered in London’s West End in 1992 before transferring to Broadway in 1993, where it won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. The production starred Chita Rivera, Brent Carver, and Anthony Crivello, and has since been staged internationally. In the Philippines, the show was staged in 2000 by Repertory Philippines.
