GUIDE: The Virgin Labfest 2025 Synopses, Cast, and More Details Announced
Now in its 20th year, The Virgin Labfest (VLF), the festival of untried, untested and unstaged plays, returns to the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez this June 11-29, 2025.
Entitled Hinog!, this year’s festival features 12 new one-act plays and 3 revisited plays from last year, and 4 new staged readings. A total of 8 Virgin (first time to be participating in the festival) playwrights, 4 Virgin directors, 3 women playwrights, and 8 women directors constitute this year’s VLF.
Also returning to the festival are the VLF Writing Fellowship Showcase, the VLF Playwrights Fair, Theater Talks, Staged Readings and the Dramaturgy Fellowship Exhibit.
The VLF Writing Fellowship Showcase is a culmination of a two-week mentorship program on the study and practice of dramatic writing for the stage under the mentorship of award-winning playwright Glenn Sevilla Mas, directed by CCP Artistic Director Dennis Marasigan. It will be held on June 29, 5 PM at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet.
The VLF Playwright’s Fair is a venue that allows for conversations with playwrights curated by award-winning writer Rody Vera. It will be held on June 14 (Topic- VLF: Lab Para sa Playwrights; Speakers- Dustin Celestino, Dingdong Novenario, Herlyn Alegre; Moderator- Maki Dela Rosa), June 21 (Topic- Filipino Theater in the US: Bindlestiff Studio and the Tagalog Project; Speakers- Lorna Velasco, Oliver Saria, Allan Manalo; Moderator- Rody Vera), and June 28 (Topic- Mula sa Midwest Hanggang sa West Coast- Teatrong Pinoy sa Chicago at Los Angeles; Speakers- Giovanni Ortega of Pintig, the Fil-am Fest; Moderator: Rody Vera), 5 PM at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet.
Theater Talks is a forum series on creative and production processes in theater and performance. It will be held on June 13 (Topic- Scenic Design; Speakers- Tuxqs Rutaquio, Loy Arcenas; Moderator- Julio Garcia), June 20 (Topic- Philippine Community Theater: Dula, Diwa, at Damdamin ng Bayan; Speakers- Rica Palis, BJ Borja; Moderator- Neil Shane Alcain), and June 27 (Topic- Improv: Theater on the Spot; Speakers- SPIT; Moderator- SPIT), 5 PM at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet.
The Staged Readings are stripped-down reading performances of selected scripts from the VLF 20 submissions. They will be held on June 17 and 24, 5 PM at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet.

The Dramaturgy Fellowship Exhibit is a culmination of the Dramaturgy Fellowship that offers a glimpse into the theater-making process of the featured plays of VLF 20 under the mentorship of Jonas Gabriel Garcia. It will be held from June 15 to 29, 5 PM at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet.
Tess Jamias and Marco Viaña return as Festival Directors for the fourth year. They are joined by Sandie Javier, Clottie Gealogo-Lucero, Nice Hervas, and Nikki Torres, who serve as production managers, Daniel Gregorio as assistant production manager, Rafa Lubigan and Camilo De Guzman as head stage managers, Roman Cruz and Loren Rivera as lighting designers, TJ Ramos, Angel Dayao, Arvy Dimaculangan, Nayr de Lun, and Zac Capinding as sound designers, Jerome Aytona, IO Balanon, Wika Nadera, and Julio Garcia as production designers, Allie Eguia as costume stylist, and GA Fallarme, Justin Santiago, Jana Jimenez, and Deidrich Tanteco as video designers, with Roldan Lozano and Renz Sevilla as technical directors.

SET A – BUBOT
1. Takbo, Batang Tondo by YOJ

SYNOPSIS:
Bakasyon ng mga bata. Nasasabik ng magsimula sa paglalaro ang apat na magkakaibigang sina Albin, Kyla, Tomtom, at Saymon. Baka ito na ang huling laro nila dahil magiging magkaiba na ang oras ng kanilang mga klase sa darating na pasukan. Sa tindi ng init ng araw, patindi na rin ng patindi ang paglalaro ng apat. Pulis si Albin, tindera sa sari-sari store si Tomton, pumayag si Saymon maging baby, at sa unang pagkakataon, gaganap na magnanakaw si Kyla. Isang action-drama ng bahay-bahayan ang eksena nila.
Pabugso-bugsong mauunsiyami ang laro dahil sa mga hindi pagkakaunawaan kung paano ba dapat dumaloy ang eksena sa kanilang munting mundo. Si Dudong ang natatanging matanda na aawat sa kanila at ang siyang tinig ng kapayapaan ng mga bata. Sa pagitan ni Dudong at away sa isa’t isa, si Albin ang tila salarin sa gulong ito.
Tuluyang matatapos ang laro sa away kaya’t mag-uuwian na lang ang lahat. Hindi tanggap ni Albin ang pangyayari. Ayon kay Albin, pulis sa kaninang laro, hindi siya ang suspek sa salang pagnanakaw. Bakit hindi si Kyla?

2. Ang Bata Kag Ang Ilaga by Liane Carlo Suelan

SYNOPSIS:
Isaac is different from the other kids in St. Jerome’s Home for Children, a childcare center. He is an orphan, unlike the other kids, whose mothers come to visit every now and then, and is often picked on by Dom because of this. One Saturday, Isaac roams near the bodega where he hears a sharp squeak. He searches for its source and finds that it is actually coming from a baby rat, alone on the ground. Isaac is confronted with a dilemma whether he should take the baby rat in and care for it or merely leave it hoping its mama would come back to get it. This bothers him for the rest of the day. Nearing sunset, he decides to take the baby rat in, but then finds the baby rat gone.

Bagsak si Igo sa summative assessment nila sa Math. Sa final exams na lang siya makakabawi, kundi uulit siya ng Grade 10. Ano ba kasi ang point ng polar coordinates?
Bakit parang nakasalalay din sa finals niya ang pagkawatak-watak ng kaniyang pamilya? Tuturuan daw siya ng kaibigan niyang si Bobbie, pero parang mas nalito pa si Igo. Ang dami na niyang iniisip, bakit pa sumasabay yung nakakalitong damdamin niya?

SYNOPSIS:
Nagbabalik-loob sa Diyos ang dating scammer na si Mariah sa pamamagitan ng pag-aalaga ng banal na imahen. Upang patunayan ang sarili, sumali siya sa taunang Lenten Exhibit kahit manipis ang kaniyang pitaka at ang pagkakaunawa niya sa pagiging camarero. Maluwalhati naman sana ang partisipasyon ni Mariah, subalit may matinding paratang sa kaniya. Ninakaw daw niya ang suot na antigong belo ng kaniyang Santa Maria Magdalena.

2. Unang Araw by Ivan Villacorta Gentolizo

SYNOPSIS:
Unang araw ni Egay mula nang masuspinde bilang pulis sa isang siyudad sa dulong bahagi ng Mindanao. Unang araw naman ni Arnel para ipakita kay Mayor, na kanyang tiyuhin, ang katapatan nito nang sa gayon ay makuha niya ang respeto at lugar sa kanilang pamilya.
Kasama sina Tambok at Enteng ay babaybayin nila ang kahabaan ng isang liblib na highway para itumba ang magiging kalaban ni Mayor at ng kanyang pamilya sa darating na halalan bago ito makapag-file ng kandidatura.
Sa kahabaan ng biyahe ay mauungkat ang pinakatatagong lihim ng bawat isa, mga nagbabanggang paniniwala’t ideyal, ang kinabibilangan nilang posisyon sa grupo maging sa lipunan, at ang tunay na dahilan kung bakit pinagsama-sama sila ni Mayor sa trabahong ito.

Senator Zaragoza continues to recover after suffering a heart attack in today’s senate hearing. The senator, who authored the landmark bill “Zara-Gulay Act of Carrot Importations”, is accused of laundering money through various charitable institutions. With her are her children: Constantino, Gertrude, and Richie.

Isang masikip na tanghalang yari sa pinagtagpi-tagping plywood, yero, at kawayan ang nagsisilbing tahanan at mundo nina Maureen at Maylene na tinaguriang “mga sirena” sa peryahan.
Kasama ang kanilang abong-abong na entablado, buwan-buwan silang naglalakbay sa iba’t ibang bayan at gabi-gabing umaawit sa pag-aalok ng aliw sa madla. Ngunit sa paghina ng kita at pananamlay ng kanilang palabas, hanggang kailan nila kayang magsuot ng ngiti at magpatuloy sa pagtatanghal na tila walang hanggan?

SYNOPSIS:
Isang tagatulak ng trolley, isang psychology student, at isang mall consignor ang sinisikap makatawid sa dulong bahagi ng tulay sa Pandacan upang umuwi. Kasabay sa pagbaybay ng bakal na daan ay isang paglalakbay na hindi inaasahang madadaanan. Sa kalagitnaan ng daan, naisipan ng mall consignor na magtatangkang tumalon sa kalaliman ng ilog Pasig. Sa paghahanap ng dahilan upang hindi matuloy ang pagtalon ay isang sikretong lalong maglulubog sa lahat. Nasa kamay ng dalawang kasama kung ano ang itutulak nila sa gabing iyon.

SYNOPSIS:

Ang “Identité” ay isang kwento ng paghahanap at pag-angkin ng sariling pagkakakilanlan. Ito rin ay isang kwento ng pagharap at pagsalungat sa kinagisnan.
Isang kasindak-sindak na sikreto ang matatagpuan sa loob ng isang damitan, na yayanigin at ilalagay sa bingit ang ugnayan ng mag-inang si Luz at Regina. Paano nila haharapin ang kwentong ito sa paghanap at pag-angkin sa kani-kanilang identite?

2. Pagkapit sa Hangin by Joshua Lim So

SYNOPSIS:
Agosto 2021, kasagsagan ng COVID-19 delta wave. Lagpas bente kuwatro oras nang tuloy-tuloy sa pagtatrabaho ang mga frontliner dahil sa dami ng ina-admit sa nag-iisang ospital sa isla. Lumala pa ang sitwasyon nang hindi dumating ang delivery ng oxygen tanks. Sa Temporary Treatment and Monitoring Facility (TTMF) nitong pampublikong ospital, napagdesisyunan ng doctor at dalawang staff nurse na hinaan ang tangke ng mga pasiy or enteng alam nilang nasa bingit na ng kamatayan, para makatipid sa supply ng hangin. Ngunit mahuhuli sila ng isang watcher, ang bantay ng pasiyente, na ayaw tanggapin na wala nang pag-asa ang kanyang naghihingalong ama.

SYNOPSIS:
A few days before the celebration of National Bible Week at an all-girls Catholic school in Quezon City, 14 year-old Marie believes she has been chosen by God to be the next Immaculate Conception. However, she is unsure and not quite ready to accept her fate. Meanwhile, her best friend Regina struggles with her feelings for Gab, the school’s resident tibo, as they practice for the Bible Week singing competition. The play follows the three girls’ interconnected journeys towards figuring out their relationship with religion, sexuality, each other, and ultimately, their own selves.

For a traditional family with conservative values, change requires a huge turn of events for it to occur. Set in the early 2000’s, amidst the rising armed conflict between the military and the rebels in the rural area, Orang and Tano, a middle aged couple, finds themselves caught in the middle of a crisis when they meet Kulas, a young boy running away from home. As they get to know each other more, conflict arises, one that challenges not only their beliefs but also their relationship with their only and beloved son Junel, a returning soldier. While the couple navigate the sudden change in their principles, they discover a new side of their son when he arrives bearing news from their job, leading them with a much difficult dilemma.

TICKETING INFORMATION
Tickets are P800 for Regular Seats and P1,000 for Premium Seats. One ticket gains access to one set of 3 one-act plays. They are available for purchase through Ticketworld, Ticket2Me and at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez.
The 20% ticket discount offered to Senior Citizens, PWD, Government and Military Personnel, and National Athletes can only be claimed at the CCP Box Office located at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez.
Festival passes are valid for use only within the selected week (premiere week, mid week, encore week). Regular Festival Passes are priced at P3,200 and Premium Festival Passes are priced at P4,000. Both passes provide perks like priority lane access for early entry, preferred seating, and a complimentary souvenir program.
Festival passes are only available onsite at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez. Cash, Debit, and Credit Card payments are available from 9am to 6pm, Tuesday to Friday.
