FIRST LOOK: Moulin Rouge! Set, Stage, and More
The Broadway-bound Moulin Rouge! the Musical began previews in Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre last July 10 (postponed from its previously announced June 27 opening). The musical, which stars Aaron Tveit as Christian and Karen Olivo as Satine, is based on the 2001 Academy Award-nominated movie musical directed by Baz Luhrmann.
Here’s a first look of Olivo as Satine captured by Matthew Murphy.
John Mark Yap, stage manager of Mula sa Buwan, Dekada ‘70 and One Night Stand: A Monthly Cabaret, was able to catch the production on its second day last July 12. When asked about the set design, he said, “Derek McLane designed one of the best sets that I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It’s already a show on its own.”
He sent TheaterFansManila.com some photos of the theater, the lobby, and the sets to give us a look into the production.
The musical is directed by Alex Timbers, with book by John Logan, music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine, and choreography by Sonya Tayeh.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical tells the fictional story of an ambitious, lovesick writer, Christian, who falls in love with Satine, the dazzling star of the Moulin Rouge. The stage musical features many of the songs from the movie and new hits released since its premiere.
