‘Dagitab’ Stage Adaptation Set for September Rerun
After its debut run last July, Scene Change’s Dagitab, a stage adaptaion written and directed by Guelan Varela-Luarca, based on the award-winning Cinemalaya film by Giancarlo Abrahan, is returning for a limited two-weekend run this September.
Originally staged at the Fine Arts Black Box, Old Communications Building, Ateneo de Manila University, the production’s run was unfortunately brought to an early close. It now moves to a larger venue, the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati, which seats 200 per show, with only six performances in total.
Dagitab premiered at the 10th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, where Abrahan won Best Director and Best Screenplay. The Young Critics Circle cited the film as Best Debut Feature of 2014, while it topped that year’s film poll of the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers (formerly Pinoy Rebyu) in the categories for Best Film, Best Performance, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Scene. The film was also nominated for Best Screenplay at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and received 14 nominations from the Gawad Urian.
The story examines the marriage of two professors, Issey and Jimmy, on the brink of separation after more than 20 years together. Jimmy searches for a deity—the subject of his research—whom he recognizes as the ghost of a friend, while Issey is drawn to Gab, a young writer who also happens to be her godson.
This rerun features the original cast: Agot Isidro as Issey, with Jojit Lorenzo as her husband Jimmy; Elijah Canlas as Gab, Issey’s sensitive godson and eventual lover; and Benedix Ramos as Angelo, a lovelorn poet who forms a deep friendship with Gab. Completing the cast is Sam Samarita as Lorena, a haunting figure from the past.
Guelan Varela-Luarca leads the creative team, which includes D Cortezano (set design), JM Cabling (movement), Jethro Nibaten (lighting), Carlos Hombrebueno (sound), and Giancarlo Abrahan (dramaturgy).
Dagitab runs on September 20 at 2 PM and 7:30 PM, September 21 at 2 PM, September 27 at 2 PM and 7:30 PM, and September 28 at 2 PM. Tickets are now available via Ticket2Me, with Tier 1 at P1,950 and Tier 2 at P1,550.
