Choosing, a two-person play featuring real-life married couple Ice Seguerra and Liza Diño, is a fusion of reality and fiction, inspired by their lived experiences and a collection of LGBTQIA+ stories. Diño makes her debut as a playwright with this piece, while Seguerra contributes additional monologues.

The play explores the deep and often complicated issues that arise in relationships, particularly when both partners are going through personal transformations. While it touches on transgender issues, it goes beyond that, shedding light on a wide range of topics that are rarely discussed openly in relationships.

Choosing also tackles sensitive subjects like sexual abuse, consent, and trust. The production aims to approach these issues with honesty, showing how past trauma can impact a person’s sense of self and their ability to fully engage in a relationship. Consent, communication, and the rebuilding of trust play crucial roles as the characters confront their fears and vulnerabilities.

The story follows the intertwined journeys of Stella, a cisgender woman, and Mitch, a transgender man. As they navigate their personal transformations and face life’s obstacles, they explore their identities and relationship. Through their stories, Stella and Mitch discover the power of choice in finding happiness and staying true to themselves. Choosing reflects their commitment to embracing their authentic selves and the paths they choose to take together.

Diño returns to the stage as Stella, marking her first performance in nine years. Her acting career began in 2000 with Dulaang UP under the mentorship of National Artist Tony Mabesa, and her most recent stage appearance was in PETA’s Noli at Fili in 2015. Seguerra, who plays Mitch, takes on his first role in a straight play. His most recent stage work includes performances in Atlantis Theatrical’s Rock of Ages and Avenue Q. This production holds special significance as it marks the first time they will be working together on stage.

Directed by Anton Juan, with music by Vincent A. DeJesus, Choosing will run for seven shows only: November 23 at 8 PM, November 24 at 2 PM and 7 PM, November 30 at 8 PM, and December 1 at 1 PM, 4:30 PM, and 8 PM, at the Doreen Blackbox Theater, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.

Tickets are priced at P2,060, P1,854, and P1,545, and are available at Ticketworld.
