‘Brokeback Mountain’ Play with Music Headed for West End
Annie Proulx’s short story Brokeback Mountain, which was previously adapted into a Hollywood film by Ang Lee in 2005, is set for a stage adaptation on London’s West End, Variety reports.
Brokeback Mountain follows the complex romantic relationship between two American cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, in the American West from 1963 to 1983. The film starred Heath Ledger as Jack and Jake Gyllenhaal as Ennis. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Ledger and Best Supporting Actor for Gyllenhaal and Best Picture and won three– Best Director for Lee, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
The West End adaptation will star Mike Faist (West Side Story) as Jack and Lucas Hedges (Lady Bird, Ben is Back) as Ennis, who will both be making their West End debuts.
The play is written by Ashley Robinson, with songs by Dan Gillespie Sells. Jonathan Butterell is set to direct. It will run at the West End from May 10 until August 12.
