Bikolana Playwright Festival ‘Manay, Manay’ to be Staged this March

Taragbo Bikol Theater Network and its member organizations is set to stage Manay, Manay!: “The Bikolana Playwright Festival” this March. This year’s theme is Honoring Women  Who Tell Tales”, which celebrates and recognizes the vital role that women have had in storytelling through history. 

The festival is divided into two sets. You can see the synopses and show schedules for Set A and Set B below.

SET A:

1. Lakatan, Talakan, Latakan by Andrea Malto 

Synopsis: Two women—both claiming ownership— argue about a banana plant which bears its fruit over the fence of a neighbor. 

2. Litanya ng Manggagawa by Eilyn Nidea 

Synopsis: Si Angie, isang online seller, si Tintin, isang nurse, at si Ipe, isang jeepney driver/delivery man, ay kumakatawan sa mga karaniwang manggagawang nagsisiwalat ng kanilang mga hinaing at karanasan sa panahon ng lockdown sa COVID-19 pandemic habang sila ay magkakasamang naghihintay sa resulta ng swab testing. Nakapaloob sa dagling dula ang interaksiyon ng dalawang babaeng magkaiba ng kalagayan at pananaw sa buhay, at ng isang lalaking sumusubok mamagitan sa kanila.

3. Kutak by Ella Añonuevo 

Synopsis: Kwentong mag-asawa na nagsasawa na sa isa’t-isa. 

4. Lawlaw by Tiffany Espinosa 

Synopsis: Lawlaw is a story that tackles the uncomfortable truth about the toxic generational patterns in a Filipino household.

5. Dinuguan by Kim Mago 

Synopsis: JC, an INC member, will be put on a test of his love for Anna—a Catholic—through a very controversial viand. 

SET B:

1. Arinola by Jolena Salvador 

Synopsis: In the midst of DPWH’s road widening, a family conflict stirs – a mother who is longing for her children’s affection and her children selfishly focusing on their own lives.

2. My Bestfriend, Dolly by Aphryll 

Synopis: A seven-year-old girl who grew up with his father plays with her dolls and tells them to keep their deep, dark secret hidden.

3. Historya by Steph De Leon 

Synopsis: Dalawang magkapatid ang pilit na inaahon ang buhay sa kahirapan sa paraan ng pagbebenta ng mga gamit sa online. Sa pagbebentang ito, hindi inaakalang maibabalik ang masalimuot na nakaraan na pilit na binabaluktot ng masa.

4. Pagpag by Ann 

Synopsis: Sa gitna ng pandemya ay ang hindi inaasahang pagpanaw ng isang ama. Dahil dito ay mahaharap ang ulila na si Risa, lalong higit ang kaniyang ate, sa isang napakahirap na  hakbangna kailangang piliin alang-alang sa mas magandang kinabukasan. Lubos man ang pasakit, kailangang talikuran ang nakasanayang mga sugat at unti-unting maniwala sa himala ng paghilom sa new normal.

5. The Search for Maria Clara by Dominique Marcaida 

Synopsis: Chloe and Lisa—both aspiring to be a lead star in a play—will debate over the qualifications of their director for Maria Clara.

Founded on August 23, 2011, Sining Banwa is a region-based interdisciplinary art organization based in Albay. The group aims to forward alternative people’s culture through the arts with Bicol as content, context, and methodological tools.
