Mari Dance, a creative dance agency, is set to stage A Dance in a Day in a Dance, a contemporary dance production about people and their everyday lives by multi-awarded choreographer JM Cabling.

A Dance in a Day in a Dance weaves together the stories of today’s dance artists—dancers, choreographers, and the unsung heroes working behind the scenes. Their narratives reveal the often-hidden struggles of the craft: a choreographer battling frustration, a dancer fighting for a role, the search for one’s true voice, and relationships tested under pressure. Through these stories, the production draws a connection between the artist’s journey and that of the audience, posing the essential question: “Why do we keep fighting for our dreams, despite the setbacks?”

The show highlights Cabling’s homegrown students while also welcoming back two dancers making their return to the Philippine stage. Al Garcia, who was based in Taiwan until August this year as a member of Tjimur Dance Theatre, joins the cast. Alongside him is Katrene San Miguel, stepping into contemporary dance after completing her contract with the Hong Kong Ballet last year, following her time with Ballet Philippines and Alice Reyes Dance Philippines. Rounding out the cast are Mari co-founders Michael Barry Que and Sarah Samaniego, who will also perform in lead roles.

Through this production, Cabling and Mari Dance aim to affirm contemporary dance as a powerful way of telling stories of real people and real lives—not only as an art form, but also as a mirror of the human experience.

Cabling’s recent works include choreographing for Barefoot Theatre Collaborative’s Mula sa Buwan, The Sandbox Collective’s Side Show and Once on This Island, Scene Change’s Dagitab, and Tanghalang Pilipino’s Kisapmata. He also serves as associate choreographer in Theatre Group Asia’s upcoming production of A Chorus Line.

A Dance in a Day in a Dance will run from Oct. 10-12, 17-19 at the Doreen Black Box Theater, Areté, at the Ateneo de Manila University. It is co-presented by Areté, in partnership with Guang Ming Dance Project and UP Dance Company. Collaborators include Mikko Angeles for Direction, Wika Nadera for Set Design, Arvy Dimaculangan for Sound Design, Joyce Garcia for Video Design, and D Cortezano for Lights Design. The show is PG-13.
