‘Archie Comics’ Musical to Stream on Netflix
Archie Andrews and the Riverdale gang are heading for a musical adventure on Netflix, directed by Indian director Zoya Akhtar.
The characters of the long-running American comic series, Archie Comics, will be starring in a new film entitled The Archies, which will introduce them to a new generation of young people in India. According to an article on Collider, the feature film adaptation will stream exclusively on streaming giant Netflix and it has been described as a “coming-of-age, live-action musical set in the 1960s.” This film will be produced by Tiger Baby and Graphic India.
More recent adaptations of the Archie comics include the television series on The CW, Riverdale, and its spinoffs, Katy Keene (a musical show) and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (which also aired on Netflix and featured some musical scenes including a version of “Masquerade” from The Phantom of the Opera).
Akhtar has previously worked on other Netflix projects such as the anthology films, Lust Stories and Ghost Stories. She was also behind the rap drama Gully Boy, which was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2019. Currently, she is also the co-creator and co-director of the Amazon Prime Video series Made in Heaven for which a second season is being developed.
No official cast announcements have been made though there are already speculations about who may join this project, including members of Bollywood royalty. Stay tuned for more details on this project.
