Filipino Adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ ‘Summer and Smoke’ Set for Intimate Staged Reading This May
Porvenir is set to mount an intimate staged reading of El Fuego del Alma, a Filipino adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke, reimagined within a Philippine context.
This psychological drama explores the intersections of emotional, societal, and spiritual unrest. First written at a time when discussions around mental health were still emerging, the piece offers a lens into inner conflict, repression, and longing.
The adaptation is written by Eljay Castro Deldoc and directed by Porvenir’s artistic director, Mark Mirando.
The piece was initially developed as a fully staged production entitled Alab at Usok in 2024 under Porvenir Collective. Deldoc shares, “Happy at excited ako para sa actors na nag-work hard sa full staging nito two years ago. Ready na sila, hindi lang nag-push through. Kaya excited ako na hindi masasayang yung efforts nila kahit staged reading muna.”
The staged reading features Opaline Santos and Hariette Mozelle alternating in the role of Alma, alongside Madeleine Nicolas, Rolando Inocencio, and Nour Hooshmand.
El Fuego del Alma runs on May 2 and 3, 2026 at Sine Pop in Cubao, Quezon City, with performances at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Tickets are priced at P800 and are available through the group’s Google Form.
Porvenir is a new theater group dedicated to staging Filipino plays, including new works and reimagined classics. The group’s debut production ran last February—a staged reading of two original one-act plays, Ang Ngipin ng Busaw and Lost Parcels, presented under the title Lost in Transit, both written by Shenn Apilado and directed by Mirando.
