‘anthropology’ by Lauren Gunderson is Barefoot Theatre Collaborative’s Next Production
Barefoot Theatre Collaborative has announced that anthropology, a play by Lauren Gunderson, one of America’s most-produced contemporary playwrights, is the company’s next staging.
anthropology is a psychological thriller that merges sci-fi with the deep ache of family grief. It tells the story of Merril, an expert AI programmer who, unable to accept the disappearance and death of her sister Angie, uses her skills to bring her back as artificial intelligence. What begins as solace and a coping mechanism quickly unravels into obsession, forcing painful questions about memory, ethics, and letting go.
The staging explores the intersection of high-tech ethics and the timeless vulnerability of the human heart. It asks the audience: In a world where we can curate our reality, what does it truly mean to let go?
The all-female cast features Jenny Jamora as the AI programmer Merril, Maronne Cruz as her sister Angie, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante as Raquel, Merril’s ex-girlfriend and the voice of reason, and Jackie Lou Blanco as Brin, Merril and Angie’s estranged mother.
The play is directed by Caisa Borromeo. Joining her on the creative team are D Cortezano for technical direction and lighting design, Sarah Facuri for production design, Arvy Dimaculangan for sound design, and Cuecraft and Steven Tansiongco for video design.
anthropology will run from March 13 to 29, 2026, at the Doreen Black Box, Areté in Quezon City, with Friday shows at 8:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday shows at 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The run lasts 90 minutes without intermission.
The show is rated PG-13 and features language and themes that may not be suitable for younger audiences. Children below seven years old will not be admitted to the theater.
Ticket sales open with an exclusive Early Bird Promo. From January 19 to February 19, audiences can enjoy a 15% discount on all tickets. Prices are Php 1,900 for Standard (regular price: Php 2,200) and Php 2,200 for Premium (regular price: Php 2,500). Tickets are available through the group’s Google Form.
