‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Comes to Solaire in May 2026
The Olivier Award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar will play at The Theatre at Solaire from May 2 to 24, 2026, as part of its major international tour.
This reimagined staging, which originated at London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the 2016 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical. It sold out two consecutive engagements in 2016 and 2017, followed by a West End run at the Barbican in 2019, a concert version at Regent’s Park in 2020, and a UK tour in 2023–24.
Featuring lyrics and music by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the production is directed by Timothy Sheader and choreographed by Drew McOnie, with design by Tom Scutt, lighting by Lee Curran, sound by Nick Lidster, and music supervision by Tom Deering.
Jesus Christ Superstar recounts the events leading to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot. Told entirely through music, the 1970s rock opera delves into the relationships and conflicts among Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, and the Roman Empire. First released as a concept album, it features iconic songs such as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane.”
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre and opened in London the following year at the Palace Theatre, where it ran for over eight years. By the time it closed, after 3,358 performances, it had become the longest-running musical in West End history. It has since been revived in numerous productions worldwide, including a 2012 Broadway revival, an ITV competition series (Superstar) that led to an arena tour, and a 45th-anniversary staging at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
Producer David Ian said, “After incredible success in Australia and the UK, we’re delighted to be bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to Manila. This Olivier Award-winning production has amazed audiences around the world with its raw energy and breathtaking performances.
