‘Samalamig Cold Readings’ with Phi Palmos is Happening Tonight
Samalamig Cold Readings, a new theater space where aspiring and budding playwrights can submit fresh, never-before-performed scripts, is happening tonight at The Brewman in Cubao Expo.
The scripts will be cold-read by willing audience members alongside a guest artist for the night. For tonight’s edition, the featured guest performer is Phi Palmos, who was also the guest artist during the group’s first show in April.
Samalamig Cold Readings is the brainchild of Carl Cuevas (PopQuizPH) and Gelo Esperanzate. “We envision the event as a safe space for exploration for aspiring and professional writers to develop these scripts and provide a refreshing experience to be part of a potential new play, whether as an audience member or reader,” they share.
“The event will be held on a quarterly basis, and we aim to invite premier theater performers to read the scripts with us and engage in a short, constructive discussion with audience members about the pieces.”
Every Samalamig Cold Reading has two acts: the first act features three fresh scripts, while the second act features a short one-act play by professional playwrights.
In the first Samalamig event last April, the featured scripts were Tell Me Where You Want Me by Gerald Manuel, MOMOL (Make Out, Make Out with Love) by Aldrich Alcantara, and Friend by Michael Lopez, while the second act featured Roleplay by Palanca Award winner Dustin Celestino.
For the upcoming Samalamig, the chosen pieces are Wala na namang Tubig by And, Need by Lia de Jesus, and Nang Dahil Sa’yo by Michael Lopez, while the second act’s one-act play is The Impossible Dream by Palanca Award winner Guelan Luarca.
Walk-in tickets for the event are P1,000 and come with a free drink.
