Once on This Island is a Broadway musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. It is based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, which in turn is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid.
The musical is set in the French Antilles in the Caribbean and tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. The story is framed as a folk tale narrated by a group of storytellers to a frightened young girl during a storm.
Once on This Island premiered Off-Broadway in May 1990 before transferring to Broadway in October 1990, where it ran for 469 performances. A notable revival opened on Broadway in December 2017, where Lea Salonga played the role of Erzulie.
The upcoming 9 Works Theatrical production will be directed by the company’s Artistic Director, Robbie Guevara.
