“Sing Street” is Headed to Broadway this April!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 2016 musical drama film Sing Street is headed to Broadway this April!
The production is currently running at the New York Theatre Workshop, where it will be concluding its run on January 26. The show will officially open on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre this April 19, with previews beginning on March 26.
The film was written and directed by John Carney, the same man who wrote and directed the 2013 film Begin Again and the 2007 film Once. The latter was also adapted to the stage and transferred to Broadway in 2012, where it won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
The book is written by Enda Walsh, the same playwright who adapted Once for the stage, with music and lyrics by John Carney and Gary Clark. It is directed by Rebecca Taichman, with choreography by Sonya Tayeh, scenic and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Christopher Akerlind, sound design by Darron L West, and music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Martin Lowe.
The cast, who will be reprising their roles from the Off-Broadway run, include Brenock O’Connor as Conor, Zara Devlin as Raphina, Sam Poon as Eamon, Billy Carter as Robert, Johnny Newcomb as Barry, Max Bartos as Darren, Amy Warren as Penny, Martin Moran as Brother Baxter, Skyler Volpe as Anne, Brendan C. Callahan as Gary, Jakeim Hart as Larry, Anne L. Nathan as Sandra, and Gian Perez as Kevin, with Ilan Eskenazi as understudy cover, and Anthony Genovesi as the drummer.
Sing Street is set in economically depressed Dublin in 1982, where thousands are seeking bluer skies across the Irish Sea. 16-year-old Conor and his schoolmates decide to turn to music to escape troubles at home and impress a mysterious girl. With a score that embraces the new wave sounds of the era, Sing Street celebrates the thrill of first love and the power of music.
