MCC Theater’s Miscast gala is an annual event that features performances from popular Broadway stars in roles that they would never be cast in!

This year, Aaron Tveit, Gavin Creel, Tina Fey, and our very own Lea Salonga, among others, performed for the evening. Tveit sang “As Long as He needs Me from Oliver!”, and performed a rousing duet with Creel, singing “Take Me or Leave Me” from Rent.

Salonga sang “Why God Why” from Miss Saigon. Salonga won the prestigious Olivier Award and Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Miss Saigon when she originated the lead role of Vietnamese protagonist Kim.  In her Miscast performance, she performs a song sang by her character’s co-star, American GI Chris. The role was originally played by Simon Bowman for the West End run, and Willy Falk for the Broadway run.

This is what Salonga says before she sings.

“The song I’m about to sing.. I’ve never actually sung it, like ever. The only times I’ve ever sung it was in my life were at this afternoon’s rehearsal, and that was two times, so this is only the third time I’m singing it so God help me. But this song has been sung to me as I lay in a bed in Miss Saigon, and a very handsome American GI would sing this song about this girl. So I’ve heard it hundreds of times… so I think I’ll be okay. This is also to usher in the fact that Miss Saigon is coming back to Broadway next year!”
