“Young Frankenstein Live” is ABC’s Next Musical Event
Based on the 2007 Broadway musical Young Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein Live is US television network ABC’s next live musical event. It’s the network’s second foray into the genre, following last November’s airing of The Little Mermaid Live starring Auli’i Cravalho.
The Broadway musical was based on Brooks’ 1974 American comedy horror film of the same name starring Gene Wilder in the titular role. With music and lyrics by Mel Brooks and a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, the musical ran for 484 performances from November 8, 2007 to January 4, 2009. It was nominated for 3 Tony Awards– Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for Christopher Fitzgerald, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for Andrea Martin, and Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Robin Wagner.
A revised version of the musical also opened in the West End on October 10, 2017. It was nominated for 3 Olivier Awards in 2018– Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Ross Noble, Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Lesley Joseph, and Best New Musical.
