Willy Wonka Origin Musical Film in the Works
Timothee Chalamet is set to play the role of the iconic chocolatier Willy Wonka in the upcoming musical film titled “Wonka” based on the chocolatier’s early life prior to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Warner Bros is returning to the big screen marking its third time adapting Dahl’s classic novel. The first one being in 1971 starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, and the second reboot in 2005 starring Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton-directed adaption.
Wonka is a prequel to the famous children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It will follow the early life of the young chocolatier Willy Wonka and his adventures starting the world’s most famous chocolate factory.
Since the film takes place before Roald Dahl’s famous story, its protagonist Charlie Bucket and his company won’t be making an appearance.
The film will be directed by Paul King, based on a script by Simon Farnaby with co-writers Simon Rich, Simon Stephenson, Jeff Nathanson, and Steven Levenson. Produced by David Heyman co-produced by Luke Kelly via Heyday Films, with executive producers Michael Siegel and Alexandra Derbyshire
The production is set to begin this September with the musical film scheduled to debut theatrically on March 17, 2023.
