Sondheim Musical “Passion” Announces Lead Cast
As previously reported, The Philippine Opera Company will be opening its 20th anniversary with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Passion” this September at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium of the RCBC Plaza.
“Passion” is a one-act musical written by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book). Set in Italy, the story is about a young soldier and his obsessive love for Fosca, his colonel’s sickly cousin. It won 4 Tony Awards– Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical for James Lapine, Best Original Score for Stephen Sondheim, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Donna Murphy (as Fosca) when it opened on Broadway in 1994.
The Manila staging stars Jasmine Fitzgerald as Clara, Vien King as Giorgio, and Shiela Valderrama-Martinez as Fosca. It will be directed by Robbie Guevara.
Passion was first staged by Repertory Philippines in 1996 as part of its 53rd season, starring Gia Macuja (Clara), Michael Williams (Giorgio), and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo (Fosca).
The show will run from September 14 until September 29. Further details will be announced soon.
