Sneak Peek: Repertory Philippines’ The Vibrator Play
Last March 17, Rep gave us a sneak peek into the technical dress rehearsal of The Vibrator Play.
The show stars Joshua Spafford who plays Dr. Givings, the man who specializes in gynecological and hysterical disorders. He treats his patients in his ‘operating theater,’ i.e. his home clinic, which happens to be right next to their living room.
Giannina Ocampo plays opposite Joshua as Catherine Givings, the good doctor’s unhappy wife who has been neglected for so long, especially in their marital bed. She listens curiously to the sounds and cries coming from the patients with absolutely no idea of what goes on in the next room. When Dr. Givings refuses to administer the treatment on her, Catherine takes matters into her own hands.
We got a look into Mio Infante’s realistic set design, which divided the stage into the operating theater and the living room. It was wonderful to see how scenes would seamlessly transition from one room to the next.
We also got to see Bonsai Cielo’s beautiful Victorian costumes which according to her takes a minimum of 10 minutes (if done by an expert) to take on and off.
Director Chris Millado mentions that costume is a very central part of the story because it had its own narratives of control, power, and restriction in that era. It informed the lifestyle and the relationship between the genders.
Caisa Borromeo plays Sabrina Daldry, Cara Barredo plays Elizabeth, Jef Flores plays Leo Irving, Hans Eckstein plays Mr. Daldry, and Tami Monsod plays Annie.
You can catch a sneak peek in the video below. The show will run from March 24-April 23 at the Onstage Theater of Greenbelt 1. It’s bound to be an awkward and hilarious evening!
