WATCH: A Quick Minute with Red Concepcion
Red Concepcion has just concluded his run as The Engineer in the UK/International and US tours of Miss Saigon.
His most recent featured roles prior to the tour include playing Chelsea in PETA’s Care Divas, Rooster in Resorts World Manila’s Annie, Dickon in REP’s The Secret Garden, Tommy Boatwright in The Necessary Theatre’s The Normal Heart, Itak-itak in Dalanghita Productions’ Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady, and Adam/Felicia in Resorts World Manila’s Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.

What got you into theater?
When I was a kid, we would watch all the old movie musicals– Singin’ in the Rain, The Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, American in Paris. I think watching that from a very young age, I just thought, ‘Oh, I think I can do that.’
What was the first theater production you remember seeing?
Joseph the Dreamer by Trumpets. That was the one I saw live, with Tito Audie Gemora.
First stage kiss?
Tanya Manalang. Trumpets Playshop. My first professional stage kiss is Jenny Jamora, Basilio ng Malolos, DUP.
Which play or musical influenced you the most?
Singin’ in the Rain, Gene Kelly. I wanted to be Gene Kelly so bad.
Ultimate dream role?
Leading player in Pippin, or Sweeney, or Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Embrace my type, and then, sooner or later, people are going to cast against type once they see what you can do.
If you weren’t in theater, what would you be doing?
I would probably be a chef.

What was the last show that made you cry?
I’ve been re-watching Lord of the Rings. *re-enacts a scene from the film*
Hardest song or scene you’ve ever performed?
My big solo in Altar Boyz. My final scene in Equus. I had to be stark naked on stage for like 5 minutes. And basically, all of Miss Saigon.
What’s the hardest thing about being in theater?
The time in between when you’re not doing it. Naks. No honestly, it’s auditions. Auditions for me are the hardest. I hate them. They’re the worst. But, they’re a necessary evil.
