A filmed production of Gutenberg! The Musical! is streaming online this month for the benefit of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.

The show stars Bobby Conte Thornton (A Bronx Tale) and Alex Prakken (Newsies) in the lead roles. The performance was recorded by Pierre Marais at Open Jar Studios with piano accompaniment by Andrew Callahan and choreography by Kaitlyn Frank.

The musical centers on two aspiring playwrights named Bud and Doug who struggle to find support for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press, Johann Gutenberg. But their attempts to secure a producer and a contract lead to hilarious consequences. All the songs in the comedy are performed by the two characters as they try their best to make it to Broadway.

Gutenberg! The Musical! was created in 2003 at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre and the show features a book and score by Tony nominee Scott Brown and Anthony King (Beetlejuice). The show premiered Off-Broadway in 2006, starring Christopher Fitzgerald and Jeremy Shamos and directed by Alex Timbers.

The whole show will be available on the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids YouTube Channel from March 19-22.

The stream is free but audiences are encouraged to donate to Broadway Cares.

Broadway Cares funds more than 450 organizations across the United States and is also the largest funder of the social service programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and the Samuel J. Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts.
