A third film in the Sister Act franchise is currently in the works at Disney.

According to a report by Deadline, Whoopi Goldberg will play her iconic role as Deloris Van Cartier. Tim Federle (High School Musical:The Musical: The Series) will be directing a script written by Madhuri Shekar (A Nice Indian Boy). The film will be produced by Tyler Perry.

According to Variety, Sister Act 3 will be released on Disney+ but no plot details have been revealed so far.

Sister Act was a 1992 comedy film about a nightclub singer named Deloris who is forced to go into hiding as a nun. The film was followed by a sequel in 1993 entitled Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. In both films, Deloris leads the choir of St. Katherine’s Parish, revitalizing their music by adding a pop flair to the songs they perform.

The original film was also adapted into a stage musical in 2006 with music composed by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater, a book by Bill and Sheri Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane, and choreography by Alistair David. The musical received five Tony Award nominations in 2011 including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Patina Miller.

Sister Act the Musical had a brief run in Manila in 2017 at the Theatre at Solaire

Goldberg was originally scheduled to play Deloris in the musical during its run in the West End in London but had to pull out after the production had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
