Diana, the new musical about the Princess of Wales, will be premiering on streaming service Netflix before its Broadway debut.

According to Variety, the show had been expected to premiere on Broadway last March 31 but this did not push through because of the pandemic. With all theaters to remain closed for the rest of 2020, Diana is now scheduled to open on stage on May 25, 2021.

The creative team behind Diana include Joe DiPietro (Memphis) for book and lyrics, David Bryan (Memphis) for music and lyrics, Kelly Devine (Come From Away) for choreography, with scoring, musical supervision, and arrangements by Ian Eisendrath (Come From Away.)

The production will be directed by Christopher Ashley and filmed without an audience on the stage of Longacre Theater. Diana will feature the original Broadway cast, including Jeanna de Waal (American Idiot, Wicked) in the titular role, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles, and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth.

The show’s producers have worked closely with Actor’s Equity Association to ensure that all health protocols will be followed and that the cast and crew will have the safest working environment possible.

While no specific airdate on Netflix has yet been confirmed, Diana will notably be the first Broadway production to debut on television prior to opening officially on stage.
