Baby Barredo, co-founder of Repertory Philippines, passed away last night, May 23, at 7:37pm from multi-organ failure brought about by sepsis. She was 80.

Along with Zenaida Amador, Baby Barredo co-founded Repertory Philippines in 1967, performing a production of “Miss Julia” with Leo Martinez, and Tony and Monina Mercado. Over 50 years and nearly 500 productions later, Repertory Philippines is still one of the country’s most distinguished theater companies.

Considered the ‘Grand Dame of Philippine Theater’, she was Chairman and Artistic Director Emeritus for REP. Most recently, Baby Barredo directed ‘Guadalupe’ the Musical and the Repertory Philippines comedy, Father’s Day, in 2019.

Fondly referred to as ‘Tita Baby’, Repertory Philippines describes her as a “consummate artist–a compleat actress, sublime singer, brilliant director, and theatrical creative genius. Known for her unrelenting passion and discipline, artistic excellence, boldness, and abounding love, Tita Baby’s legacy lives on in every REP artist and audience member whose love and passion for theater she has powerfully and indelibly set alight.”
